Perlite is an amorphous volcanic glass that has a relatively high water content and is typically formed by the hydration of obsidian. It occurs naturally and has the unusual property of greatly expanding when heated sufficiently.
 
Since perlite is a form of natural glass, it is classified as chemically inert and has a pH of approximately 7.0. This substance is used in grow chambers to capture moisture and release humidity over a long period of time making it ideal for mushroom cultivation.
