The shredded straw is pasteurized and then used as a casing substrate for mycelium to grow. It provides nutrients and a solid bed which you can lay casing soil to produce larger fruits but you can also fruit a variety of edible and medicinal mushrooms directly from straw. This straw is used with the Mushbox Casing kit if you want to learn more about how to use this straw with a mushroom kit checkout the video for that particular mushroom kit.
 
Only the cleanest straw is used for our straw bags and every peice is cut to 2" inches or less to ensure a fine mesh when used for casing mushrooms.  The mycelium needs smaller ends and frayed tips to catch hold and start colonization.  Once you start to see mycelium forming on the straw try not to expose it to the outside environment as it is in a sensitive growth stage were contamination can take hold.
