The actual jars are made from durable, high temperature plastic that can withstand the heat and pressure of an autoclave making them virtually indestructible, and perfect for mycology use. These jars are also slightly larger than the regular half pint wide mouth jars previously used; this means approximately two ounces more substrate is inlcuded in each jar!
The substrate inside is made with only the freshest and most organic grains available making it excellent for growing a variety of different mushroom species. The Mushbox original blend of substrate has been developed over the past 12 years creating a product that works well with a variety of edible and medicinal mushroom species.
This style of jar concept was first used by PF (professor fanaticus) and has become a very popular method for mushroom cultivation over the years. Once you have fully grown mycelium inside the jar it can be easily removed and holds its shape, this is called a "cake" and can be placed into a grow chamber, stacked into a pyramid shape or placed evenly to induce fruiting.
The video displayed below shows the older version of the substrate jars before we moved to plastic, however the inoculation and incubation process is identical.
